TIme Sensitive: Cesspool Conversion Grant Money

Lance Owens (RS) with LUVA Real Estate, here to provide an update on the latest developments related to the Cesspool Conversion initiative. Under Act Act 153, a grant is being offered to offset the conversion cost, with applications becoming available on March 15, 2023. It is imperative that interested parties expedite their application process, as only 220 grants are available out of a total of 88,000 cesspools.
On the Big Island alone, there are over 49,000 cesspools and approximately 90 grants will be provided. This initiative aims to aid homeowners in defraying the expenses associated with converting from a cesspool to a septic or an approved wastewater system. It is essential to note that the program comes with stringent guidelines, but those who meet the eligibility criteria can receive up to $20,000 in reimbursement.

Several key parameters govern the grant program. For instance, the conversion must be completed after July 1 2022 and before July 30, 2024, the cesspool must be located in a Priority 1 or 2 zone and there are income restrictions. 
It is recommended that homeowners determine their Priority zone before applying for the grant. While the Hawaii Cesspool Prioritization Tool is available to assist in this process, it is not entirely accurate, and applicants are encouraged to exercise discretion in relying on this tool solely. You can apply prior to doing your conversion, but work must be completed within 9 months - this is a critical to know.
